Vermox is the brand name and the generic name of the medicine is Mebendazole which is the active ingredient. This is available in chewable tablets of 100 mg. this medicine is used in the treatment of pinworm, whipworm, common roundworm, and hookworm (common and American) infections. The effectiveness of this medicine varies if the patient has diarrhea already and also with the degree of the infection in their body. The strains of helminth also play a role in the effectiveness of the treatment. The Vermox tablet is available in blister packs of twelve. The tablet should be stored in temperatures between 15 to 25 deg C.
Recommendations
The dosage of the tablet is the same for children and the adults. One tablet of vermox is taken once if the person is affected by Pinworm. For Whipworm, Common Roundworm, and Hookworm the dosage is 1 tablet in the morning and 1 tablet in the evening. This dosage has to be taken for 3 successive days. With this dosage patient will be mostly cured. If not cured a second dosage of treatment should be started after 3 weeks. There is no need for fasting or any other special procedures to be followed in the treatment.
Precautions
In some patients taking Vermox might have diarrhea and abdominal pain if they have severe infections. Hypersensitive reactions are found in some patients. Such reactions include rashes, angioedema, which are deeper hives, and hives like formation in the skin which are allergic reactions. In some rare cases convulsions are also found. This drug is not tested in children below 2 years of age and hence this drug is used in such children it is necessary to take proper consultation and precautions. In case of overdose of the medication activated charcoal can be given so that vomiting is induced in the patient which alleviates the condition of overdose.
