Strattera is the brand name for the generic medicine Atomoxetine Hcl. This drug is used in the treatment of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Strattera is available in the form of capsules of strengths 10 mg, 18 mg, 25 mg, 40 mg, 60 mg, 80 mg and 100 mg.
Recommendations
Follow the prescription given to you by your doctor. Do not take this medicine in larger amounts than prescribed to you. Strattera is usually taken once in a day but is varies according to the patients response. Strattera can be taken with or without food. Do not open the capsule. The initial recommended dose is 0.5 mg/kg for 3 days and thereafter 1.2 mg/kg of weight. The total dose should not exceed 100 mg for children and young adults. Dose adjustments are needed if you have a history stroke, artery disease, high or low blood pressure, problems in liver or kidney, and psychotic disorder.
Precautions and Contraindications
If you are using any MAO inhibitor at present or have used such MAO inhibitors within the past 2 weeks you should not use Strattera. Using Strattera when you have used MAO might be life-threatening. It might lead to sudden death or heart problems. If you already have any heart problems, it should be disclosed to your doctor before taking this medication. Symptoms of depression, unusual thoughts, hurting yourself, mood changes might occur while taking Strattera. Your family members should be informed about the effects of taking Strattera and they should keep a watch on your behavior. If there is any unusual behavior they have to contact your doctor immediately. You and your family should know that Strattera affects the way you think and behave. Side effects like chest pain, irregular heartbeats, unusual thoughts, suicidal thoughts, stomach pain, and nausea, less urine, constipation, dry mouth, sleep problems, increased menstrual cramps and loss of interest in sex might occur when you are in Strattera. Drug interactions with other drugs like celecoxib, cimetidine, amiodarone, albuterol, quinidine, ritonavir, ranitidine, clomipramine, other antidepressants and antihistamines are possible. Consult your doctor for dosage adjustments if you are on these drugs too.
