Famciclovir is the main ingredient of the drug Famvir. The color of the Famciclovir could be from white color to pale yellow color. At normal temperatures it is soluble in water and precipitates quickly. This drug is for oral administration only. Tablets of 125mg, 250mg and 500mg are available in the market. It has a lot of inactive ingredients like magnesium stearate, sodium starch glycolate, hydroxypropyl cellulose, titanium dioxide, lactose, polyethylene glycols, and hydroxyproply methylcellulose. This drug is mainly used in the treatment of herpes simplex infections.
Recommendations
For patients who are affected by Herpes Zoster the dosage of 500 mg for every 8 hours should be given for one week. Treatment should be started immediately after it is diagnosed otherwise it will not be effective. Patients who suffer from Genital herpes can take a dosage of 1000mg twice for one day. If they get genital herpes frequently they can take a dosage of 250mg daily twice for one year. If you are to take Famvir for more than one year you have to consult your doctor. 500mg twice a day for one is the recommended dosage for HIV infected patients. If the patient is affected by reduced renal function then the dosage is reduced for such patients. Such patients should consult their doctor for the appropriate dosages to be taken. If take the dosage all by yourself, the condition might get worse than you think
Precautions
Side effects like hallucinations, confusion, urticaria are reported on patients who have taken Famvir. In HIV infected patients headache, vomiting, diarrhea and abdominal pain are reported frequently. Some patients have reported skin reactions of serious nature after taking Famvir. Patients with renal diseases should take Famvir in correct dosage. Inappropriate dosage of Famvir in such patients might cause serious renal failures. Nursing mothers should avoid taking Famvir unless the benefits exceed the risks. In patients with galactose intolerance and mal-absorption the usual Famvir 125, 250, and 500 mg tablets should not be given. Keep track of the side effects that you get after taking this medication and consult your doctor for the recommended dosage.
