What is Alprostadil
Alprostadil suppositories and injections are administered for the treatment of any type of erectile dysfunction any men might have, including but not limited to inability to get and maintain erection and impotence. This remedy belongs to the class of drugs called vasodilators which work by relaxing the blood vessels and muscles of the penis and allowing more blood enter the male organ, thus, promoting a hard and durable erection.
Despite the popular belief, vasodilators don’t increase sexual desire, cure impotence or prevent the spread of STDs.

Precautions and Contraindications

Inform your doctor if you have ever had such conditions as blood cell problems, multiple myeloma, polycythemia, sickle cell anemia, leukemia, cavernosal fibrosis, Peyronie’s disease, heart failure or penile implant, or the history of lung, kidney, liver disease, bleeding disorder or fainting.
Alprostadil Interactions
Alprostadil may interact with the following medicines: high blood pressure drugs and blood thinners. Inform your doctor about any remedies you are currently using or are planning to use to avoid the risk of side effects.
Side Effects
Among the common side effects that may arise during the therapy and don’t need special attention until they become bothersome and severe are the following: headache, redness of the penis, pain in the penis, perineum, testicles, or legs, burning sensations or warmth in the area of the urinary opening, vision and skin problems, back pain, bleeding in the place where the medicine has been put.
Serious adverse reactions include the following: fainting, fast heartbeat, prolonged erection that lasts more than four hours, nodules on the penis, swelling, redness, unusual curving or tenderness of the erected penis, swollen veins in legs. These need to be reported to your healthcare provider immediately.
Inform your doctor about all the medications you are currently taking mentioning other drugs, herbal remedies, nutritional supplements, and vitamins. Don’t change the dose, start or stop the intake of Alprostadil without your doctor’s notice.
Overdose
The symptoms of overdose include but are not limited to nausea, dizziness, fainting, pain in the penis, blurred vision, and prolonged erection. If you have taken too much of Alprostadil and have noticed the signs of overdose, call the poison control center or seek immediate medical assistance to avoid complications.
